When, in the course of a day, are the hands least busy? Probably in the short stretch between the bath and bed. No keys to turn, no keyboard to type on, no dishes to wash. It is one of the few moments when the hands are simply resting as hands.

Daytime moisturising is almost always rushed. After washing, before returning to a desk, in the half minute before a train arrives. There is time to apply, but rarely time to work the product in properly. Evening is the reverse. There is no reason to hurry, the hands are clean, and the room is quiet.

Soie places these few evening minutes at the centre of hand beauty. This article describes a routine for caring for the hands at the close of the day, and explains how it carries through to the impression the hands make the next morning.

Why evening suits the hands

After a bath, the hands are at their cleanest, warm and softened. With sebum and dirt washed away they are also quick to lose moisture, and if nothing is applied before sleep, they spend the hours until morning in dry air.

If, on the other hand, moisture is given to them straight after bathing, the hands will go almost the whole night without being washed or rubbed. A serum that would be rinsed away at the next hand wash during the day stays on the skin until morning. The same quantity, applied at night, simply has longer to keep the skin company.

The back of the hand has little sebum and thin skin, so dryness and the changes that come with age tend to show there before they show on the face. Many people give the face careful attention each night; the hands are often forgotten. If the hands are to be regarded as a subject of beauty care like the face, lending them a share of the evening is the natural next step.

The evening routine in five movements

The routine Soie proposes takes two minutes at most. Settling the order in advance lets the body move without thinking.

  1. Wash the hands and pat them dry, leaving no droplets. After a bath, go straight to the next step.
  2. Take one or two pearl-sized drops of serum onto the back of one hand.
  3. Bring the backs of the hands together and spread the serum gradually over the whole surface.
  4. Work it in with the whole palm, then interlace the fingers so it reaches between them. Around the joints, stroke each finger lightly in turn.
  5. Finish by pressing gently around the nails, where the skin dries most readily.

The secret of the evening is to extend the time spent working the serum in rather than to increase the amount. The basics of daytime application are set out in how to apply a hand serum; at night, all that needs adding is slowness.

Closing the day with scent

Evening hand beauty has a role beyond the skin. Moving the hands while noticing a fragrance releases the tension of the day and shifts the mood towards sleep.

Scent is said to act on emotion and memory through the sense of smell. Bring the hands near the face, press the palms together, and breathe in slowly. The day's appointments and tomorrow's worries recede a little. The reason a hand serum or a hand soap should carry a delicate, perfume-grade fragrance becomes clearest in this moment.

Some people worry about fragrance lingering on the bedding. A scent designed to be enjoyed close to the hands does not spread strongly around the pillow, and a texture that leaves no stickiness means there is no need to hesitate before touching the sheets.

It helps to think of the evening routine as a boundary rather than a chore. The lamp goes down, the phone is set aside, the hands are given their two minutes, and only then does the day end. Habits that mark a transition tend to last longer than habits that merely add a task, because they come to feel like part of the evening itself.

Be realistic about what a single night can do. One evening of care will not transform the hands, and Soie does not claim otherwise. What the evening routine offers is consistency: a moment that recurs every day, in the same place, at the same hour, with nothing competing for attention. Over weeks, that regularity is what keeps the hands supple and comfortable, and what lets the skin stay healthy through seasons that are hard on it.

It is also the point in the day when small changes are easiest to notice. Dryness around a knuckle, a nail contour that has begun to split, a knuckle that feels tight when bent. Noticing early means the habit can be adjusted early, by adding a cream on top or by wearing gloves for the next day's chores, long before anything becomes uncomfortable.

Layering on very dry nights

In winter, or after a day of wet work, a serum on its own may not feel like enough. On those nights, apply the serum first and then layer a hand cream of your choice over it. The order matters: the serum, built on water and beauty ingredients, goes first; the cream, which uses oils to hold off dryness, goes on top.

On nights when the hands are badly chapped, a pair of cotton gloves worn over the moisturiser until morning can help. Wait until the hands are quite dry before putting them on, and prefer a powder-free pair to limit irritation. If redness or itching persists, please consult a dermatologist.

Where Soie's hand serum fits in

Soie's Enlight Hand Serum is a beauty serum designed only for the hands. It combines EGF and KGF (skin-conditioning ingredients) with five ceramides and peptides (moisturising ingredients), and its light texture sinks in without stickiness, so little is left on the bedding, while a fragrance composed by the brand's dedicated perfumer accompanies the quiet of the evening.

Morning and night, wash and then moisturise, at the two ends of the day. That is the whole of the habit Soie proposes. Tonight, before turning out the light, give the hands two minutes. The hand that reaches for the door handle tomorrow morning may look just a little different.
