When did you last look closely at your mother's hands? As a child you were led across the road by them, and on feverish nights one of them rested on your forehead. As adults we see those hands less often. Then, on a visit home, a glimpse of the back of her hand in the kitchen can bring the passing years into focus all at once.

Fine dryness across the back of the hand, knuckles a little more pronounced than they were, nails kept short for practical reasons. These are the signs of hands used for a family rather than for herself. Because hands are checked in a mirror far less often than the face, they always come last in the order of care.

With the second Sunday of May approaching, it is the season for deciding what to give. Alongside flowers and good things to eat, Soie suggests a different kind of gift: hand beauty. It is a present addressed to the years those hands have worked.

What a mother's hands record

The hands are said to be the most heavily used part of the body. They grip, wash, chop, wipe and lift. Through housework, childcare and work they go all day without rest, exposed throughout to water, detergent, friction and sunlight.

The skin on the back of the hand is thin and has little sebum of its own, so dryness, dullness and a loss of firmness tend to appear there sooner than on the face. What is written on a mother's hands is not neglect; it is the record of work accumulated over decades. That is precisely why a gift directed at those hands carries meaning.

Why hand beauty makes a good gift

Gifts come with the anxiety of getting it wrong. Clothes depend on size, jewellery on taste, make-up on skin tone. Hands are different. Everyone uses them every day, everyone notices age in them, and they come in no size and no shade number.

Neither age nor skin type stands in the way. However old a mother is, whatever her skin is like, the two acts of washing the hands and moisturising them remain the same. Having so few variables to worry about is a quiet reassurance when choosing a present.

Hand beauty is also something people postpone for themselves. Someone who never skips her face-care routine may still not think of her hands in the same way. Something a person would not buy for herself but is glad to receive: that is exactly the right distance for a gift.

A serum and a soap, together

The foundation of hand beauty as Soie proposes it is simple: wash, then moisturise. A soap that leaves the hands moisturised with every wash, and a serum worked from the back of the hand to the fingertips afterwards. Give the two together and a habit settles into a mother's day without effort.

The soap by the basin meets every pair of hands in the household. The serum keeps her company for the few minutes at night, after the kitchen is cleared, when she attends to her own hands alone. A gift that is used every day, inside ordinary life, is about as much as any gift can hope for.

Thinking about how to give it

The pleasure of choosing by scent

Soie's products carry a delicate, perfume-grade fragrance created by the brand's own perfumer. It is designed to be enjoyed close to the hands rather than to fill a room, so it does not project the way a perfume does; it is noticed softly when the hands come near.

Scent is said to have a way of calling back memory. Each time she washes her hands or works in the serum, the fragrance rises, and with it the day the gift arrived. It is a present that is delivered again with every use.

For the giver, the time spent choosing a scent with a particular person in mind is already part of the present. Does she like something bright, or something quieter? Will she use it mostly during the day, or in the evening as she winds down? Choosing the same fragrance for the serum and the soap means the scent is layered through both washing and moisturising.

In a gift bag, with a few words

Soie offers a gift bag for the occasion. The moment of handing something over, and the gestures that go with it, belong to the gift as much as the contents do.

Many of us live at a distance and cannot be there on the day itself. Even so, two bottles, one by the basin and one at the bedside, will meet her hands at the turning points of every day. A habit closes a little of the distance that geography leaves open.

The words do not need to be long. "Thank you for everything your hands have done" is enough. Each time she looks at her hands afterwards, she will think of the person who gave them attention. The combinations of serum and soap can be seen on our gift page.

How Soie approaches it

Soie (pronounced swah; French for silk) works under a single idea: beauty begins with the hands. We regard the hands as a subject of beauty care in the same way as the face. Enlight Hand Serum is a beauty serum designed only for the hands; Moist Fragrance Hand & Body Soap moisturises with every wash. Both have a gentle formula suitable for sensitive skin and children, and can be used at any age.

A mother's hands will go on working. If, in the evening, they carry a faint scent, and in the morning they feel smooth, that small change is one answer to the question of what to give in May. For the thinking behind all of this, see our page on the idea of hand beauty.
