Two questions tend to arrive together in English: what is a hand serum, and what makes a Japanese hand serum different. In Japan the phrase is already at home on the bathroom shelf. In English it still needs an introduction.

Japanese skincare for the face has long included a step called biyoeki, a beauty serum, which comes after the lotion and before the cream. A hand serum is simply that step, offered to the hands. The idea sounds small. It changes how the hands are regarded.

This article sets out what a hand serum is, why it takes the form it does, how a formula for the hands is thought through, and the Japanese idea behind all of it: that the hands deserve the same beauty care as the face.

A definition: a beauty serum made only for the hands

A hand serum is a beauty serum designed only for the hands. It goes by several names in English, hand essence among them, and in Japanese by several more; they all describe the same thing. Soie calls it a hand serum, a beauty serum for the hands.

The difference from a hand cream lies in purpose. A hand cream protects: a film of oil over the surface of the skin slows the loss of water. A hand serum is built on water and beauty ingredients, and its purpose is beauty rather than protection, layering moisture and smoothness into the stratum corneum to bring out the radiance the hands already have.

In practice the two belong to different moments of the day. A serum is for the many small occasions when the hands have just been washed and will be in use again within a minute; a cream, with its oil, is for the evening or for very dry weather, when the hands can afford to carry something heavier.

Neither is superior to the other; they do different jobs and can be layered, serum first and cream on top. We have compared the two more fully in what sets a hand serum apart from hand cream.

Form: why a serum is built on water

The form of a serum shapes how it feels in use. Where an oil-based cream sits on the skin, a water-based serum melts in the moment it is applied. Being able to touch a phone or a keyboard immediately afterwards is a decisive condition for anything meant to be used several times a day.

The hands are washed far more often than the face. Each wash takes moisture with it, and each time the moisture has to be given back. If what is applied many times a day feels heavy, the habit does not survive the week. The lightness of a hand serum is not a matter of taste; it follows from the circumstances of the hands themselves.

The size matters too. A bottle of around 30 mL sits on a desk or in a bag, within reach after every wash. Fitting into that path through the day counts for as much as the texture, because a product that is not to hand at the basin is not used.

Formula: skin-conditioning and moisturising ingredients

Soie's hand serum is built on two pillars. The first is a pair of skin-conditioning ingredients, EGF and KGF, listed in the ingredients as oligopeptide-1 and oligopeptide-41. The second is a group of moisturising ingredients: five ceramides (ceramide EOP, NG, NP, AG and AP) together with peptides.

The skin-conditioning ingredients keep the skin of the hands healthy; the moisturising ingredients support the sebum film that holds water in the stratum corneum. Around them sit plant-derived oils such as squalane and jojoba seed oil, and more than twenty botanical extracts, among them rosemary, aloe, chamomile and lavender. More than 95% of the serum's ingredients are of natural origin.

Fragrance is part of the formula rather than an afterthought. Each of Soie's five fragrances is composed by the brand's dedicated perfumer to a perfume-grade standard, blended with the temperature and humidity of the hands in mind, and evolves from top to base notes with the warmth of the skin. It is pitched to be enjoyed close to the hands, not to fill a room.

Soie does not describe what an ingredient does inside the skin. It describes roles, and it describes how the hands feel afterwards: immediately, after thirty minutes, after several hours. Designing that sequence of touch is, we think, what it means to make a beauty serum for the hands rather than a cream that happens to be light.

The Japanese idea: the hands as a subject of beauty care

Ordinary hand care is defensive. It protects the hands from dryness and roughness and stops there. What Soie calls hand beauty goes a step further: drawing out moisture, smoothness and radiance, and taking fragrance and gesture into account, so that the hands are cared for as the face is. Regarding the hands as a subject of beauty care is the idea from which the hand serum, as a form, emerged.

Soie (pronounced swah; French for silk) was born in Tokyo in October 2021 as a specialist brand devoted to that single field. It defines beautiful hands from both sides: the science of the skin's structure, the balance of water and lipids, circulation, and the resonance between scent and the nervous system; and the sensibility of gesture, the way a hand is offered or a cup is held.

The habit that goes with the idea is as plain as the idea itself: wash, then moisturise. After washing with a soap that moisturises as it cleans, smooth the serum from the backs of the hands to the fingertips and the nail contours, at the turning points of the day. Nothing in it requires time or skill. What it requires is the decision to count the hands as part of beauty at all.

Someone searching in English for a Japanese hand serum is probably looking less for a product than for this attitude: the care of the hands taken seriously, step by step, as part of beauty rather than as an afterthought. A Japanese hand serum is that attitude in a bottle. Its background is described on our Hand Beauty page.

About Soie's hand serum

Enlight Hand Serum is the beauty serum Soie designed only for the hands. A 30 mL bottle holds the skin-conditioning and moisturising ingredients, the plant oils and extracts, and one of five fragrances composed by the brand's dedicated perfumer. The formula is gentle enough for sensitive skin and children; if it does not agree with your skin, stop using it.

Take one or two pearl-sized drops on the back of the hand, bring the hands together to spread it, and work it in between the fingers and around the nails. Repeat after each wash. That may be the shortest answer to the question of what a hand serum is.
