Hand Beauty Journal

When the summer holidays begin, the washroom becomes a busy place. A child's hands back from the garden, a grandparent's hands after watering the plants, a mother's hands between stages of cooking, a father's hands at the end of the day. One bottle of soap meets, in turn, hands of every age and every kind of skin.

There is something pleasant about a household sharing the same things. But the picture contains a question. Is one bottle right for someone with sensitive skin, for a small child and for an adult alike? This article looks at what the phrase gentle formula covers, how to judge when a product does not agree with you, and a way of washing and moisturising that children can follow.

What a gentle formula covers

Soie's hand serum and hand soap are formulated to be gentle enough for sensitive skin and for children, and are designed to be used regardless of skin type, age or gender. The soap washes hands and body, and the serum can be used on elbows and knees, which is why they are often chosen as a single bottle to share within a family.

Both products carry this description because of how they were put together: the choice of raw materials and their proportions were made with easily irritated skin in mind from the start, rather than adjusted afterwards for a separate version.

The phrase does not mean that the products suit everyone. Skin differs from person to person, and the same skin changes with the season and with general health. A gentle formula is a statement that the formula was designed to keep irritating elements to a minimum. It is not a phrase that makes checking compatibility unnecessary.

Checking compatibility

Points for sensitive skin

When the skin's barrier is weakened, repeated contact with an ingredient that does not agree with it can take time to settle. If a strongly scented product or one high in alcohol causes irritation, avoiding such products is recommended. Choosing products that contain barrier-supporting ingredients such as ceramides is one approach.

At the same time, over-relying on products that suppress dryness temporarily with a film of oil is something to be careful of. Rather than covering alone, the aim of balancing water and lipids in the skin serves sensitive hands too. If redness or itching persists, consult a dermatologist rather than deciding alone.

On fragrance, honestly

Every Soie product carries a fragrance created by the brand's own perfumer; there is at present no fragrance-free version. The scent is designed to be enjoyed close to the hands and does not spread the way a perfume does, but anyone who finds fragrance itself disagreeable should not feel obliged to use it.

In a household with a child who is sensitive to scent, one approach is for an adult to use the product first and judge how much fragrance is noticeable when the hands are brought close, before the child begins to use it.

Using it for the first time

If you are new to the product or your skin is sensitive, try a small amount on an inconspicuous area such as the inside of the arm. Wait a day, and if all is well, begin using it on the hands. The same applies to children: the adult tries it first, then a small amount on the inside of the child's arm.

If redness, itching or irritation appears, stop using the product. A mismatch does not mean the skin is weak or the product is poor. It is a question of compatibility, and nothing more.

A routine children can follow

Children wash their hands quickly and roughly. Try giving the sequence in three short phrases: lukewarm water, wrap in foam, press to dry. Hot water strips the skin's oils, so keep the water lukewarm; spread the lather over the backs of the hands and between the fingers; press the towel against the skin rather than rubbing, leaving no droplets.

Making it a game helps. Count to ten while the foam is on, look for the spot between the thumb and the first finger that always gets missed, check the towel for wet patches. A routine that is fun at six is simply a routine at sixteen.

Then moisturise. The only time in life when this last step can be built into a habit from the start is the period when a child stands at the basin beside a parent. A small amount on the back of the hand, palms together, worked between the fingers. When an adult does it on their own hands, the child copies.

What sharing one bottle means

Sharing a bottle has a meaning beyond convenience. With one bottle by the basin, a scent rises every time someone uses it, and someone else notices and washes their hands. Hand care stops being an individual effort and becomes part of the air of the house.

For a child, it is a chance to learn by watching that washing is followed by moisturising. For an adult, it is a reason not to put their own hands last. A single bottle quietly aligns the hand habits of a whole family.

How Soie approaches it

Soie regards the hands as a subject of beauty care, just like the face, and designs its products to be used at any age and with any skin type. Moist Fragrance Hand & Body Soap washes hands and body in a soft lather and leaves the skin moisturised with every wash. Enlight Hand Serum sinks in without stickiness and can be used on elbows and knees. Both come with the same note: if the product does not agree with you, stop using it.

Questions about hand care for sensitive skin and about use with children are answered in our hand beauty Q&A. Full details of the soap are in the hand soap collection.
