Veins on Hands: Why They Stand Out, and the Habits That Keep the Hands Looking Plump
Veins on the hands show for two different reasons. Some stand out for an afternoon, in heat or after too little water; others appear over years, as what lies beneath the skin changes. Knowing which is which shows what the skin itself can do.
There comes a time when the blue lines on the back of the hand seem more visible than they used to be. A hot afternoon, the hour after exercise, a day when you forgot to drink water. Or simply a year when the hands began to look bonier. The veins on the hands have not multiplied. What has changed is what covers them.
This page explains why veins on hands stand out, keeping to general knowledge about the skin: how thin the skin of the back of the hand is, how little fat lies under it, what age changes, and what heat, posture and hydration do. It then separates the temporary from the lasting, and sets out what the skin itself can do, which is to stay moist, smooth and soft to the eye.
There is nothing here about procedures. It is about how to protect and moisturise one of the thinnest stretches of skin on the body.
Why veins on hands stand out: thin skin, little fat
The skin on the back of the hand is among the thinnest on the body, with little sebum and very little fat beneath it. The veins run just under that skin, so when the covering is thin, they show through. Visible veins on the hands begin with this structure before anything else.
The same person's palms show no veins at all; a thick stratum corneum and a different construction of the skin see to that. The contrast between the back of the hand and the palm is the starting point for thinking about the hands as a subject of beauty.
Build and constitution
People who carry little fat under the skin, or whose skin is naturally thin, tend to show veins on the hands at any age. The prominent veins on the hands of someone who trains regularly come from a generous blood supply and little fat, and are in their own way a sign of good condition. The structure of the hand is described in our Hand Beauty Guide.
Age and the changes beneath the skin
The ageing of the hands is easier to understand divided in two: changes in the skin itself, and changes beneath it. In the skin, there is dryness, there are lines, there are spots. Beneath it, the fat thins and the skin loses firmness, and the veins, bones and tendons come forward.
This is why the plump hands of youth take on a bonier look with the years. The changes beneath the skin are considered beyond the reach of self-care. The changes in the skin, on the other hand, can be prevented with sun protection and moisturising.
What the skin itself can do
No cosmetic alters the prominence of a vein. But when the surface above it is dry, uneven and slack, the vein is thrown into sharper relief. Keeping that surface moist and smooth is the part that belongs to the skin, and it softens the impression the whole hand makes. Age-appropriate care is covered on our page about aging hands.
When veins show for a while: hydration, heat and posture
Veins on the hands rise and settle over the course of a single day. This has nothing to do with age; it is the body's state at that hour.
- Heat. To shed warmth, the vessels near the skin widen and show more. The same happens after a bath or exercise.
- Dehydration. When the body is short of water, the skin loses its plumpness and the veins stand out more clearly.
- Posture. Hands held low fill with blood and the veins swell. Raise the hands to chest height and they settle.
- Effort. After carrying something heavy, the veins stay full for a time.
All of these pass as the body settles. Drink water through the day, avoid leaving the hands hanging for long stretches, and keep away from very hot water. None of these is for the veins so much as for the condition of the body and the skin of the hands. If the bony look comes and goes within hours, these four are the first things to review.
Moisturising habits that keep the hands looking plump
What the skin can do is keep the surface of the back of the hand filled with moisture, even in texture and smooth. A back of the hand that looks dry and shrunken and one that is supple and returns the light make very different impressions over the same vein.
- After washing in lukewarm water, pat dry and moisturise at once. The back of the hand is washed far more often than the face and loses its sebum film every time.
- Take the product on the back of the hand and spread from there, cupping one hand over the other so the thin skin is enclosed rather than rubbed.
- Apply sunscreen to the backs of the hands by day. Ultraviolet light advances dryness and the loss of firmness that make the changes beneath more visible.
- At night, take your time: back of the hand to wrist, between the fingers, around the nails. On very dry days, add a cream.
Smoking, lack of sleep and heavy drinking are among the lifestyle factors said to hasten ageing of the hands; the hands reflect how the days are lived. If any symptom persists, consult a dermatologist.
Frequently asked questions
Why do the veins on my hands stand out?
The skin on the back of the hand is thin, with little fat beneath it, so the veins just under the surface show through easily. With age the fat thins further and the skin loses firmness, and the veins come forward. Heat, dehydration and hands held low make them stand out for a while as well.
Can moisturising change how visible the veins are?
No cosmetic alters the prominence of a vein. What moisturising does is keep the surface above it moist, even and smooth. A dry, uneven surface throws the vein into sharper relief, so keeping the skin supple softens the overall impression the hand makes; that is the part the skin can do.
Is it normal to have visible veins on the hands when young?
Yes, it is common. People with little fat under the skin, naturally thin skin, or who exercise regularly tend to show veins on the hands at any age. On hot days, after exercise or when short of water they rise for a while and settle again as the body does.
Does the sun make veins on the hands more noticeable?
Indirectly, yes. Ultraviolet light advances dryness and the loss of firmness in the skin of the back of the hand, and those changes in the skin make what lies beneath more visible. Apply sunscreen to the backs of the hands every morning and reapply roughly every two hours outdoors.
Why do the veins swell when my hands hang down?
When the hands are held below the heart, blood pools in them and the veins fill and stand out; heat and carrying something heavy have the same effect. Raise the hands to chest height and they settle. This is the body's state at that hour, not a change of age, and it passes as the body does.
Soie's hand serum
Soie (pronounced swah; French for silk) designed Enlight Hand Serum, a beauty serum for the hands alone, around the difference between the back of the hand and the palm. Five ceramides, peptides and sodium hyaluronate (moisturising ingredients) bring moisture to the thin skin of the back of the hand, while EGF and KGF (skin-conditioning ingredients) keep it in good condition. It sinks in without stickiness and can be reapplied after every wash.
It is not a serum that changes the veins. What Soie takes care of is the skin that covers them, its moisture and smoothness, and the daily habit that keeps the hands looking soft. Further questions about how the hands change with age are answered in our Hand Beauty Q&A.
