Dull Hands: The Four Causes, and the Care That Keeps the Skin Clear

Dull hands are less a change of colour than a loss of light. When the surface of the skin stops reflecting evenly, the hands look clouded. Dryness, friction, sun and sluggish circulation are the four causes, and each has its own remedy in daily habits.

People who notice the slightest dullness in the face often fail to notice dull hands at all. It tends to register against a white cuff, or when both hands are laid side by side in good light, and the backs of the hands look faintly clouded. The cloud is not a change in the colour of the skin. It is the surface no longer returning light the way it should.

This page separates dull hands into four causes, dryness, friction, sun and circulation, and sets out what daily care can do about each, with one aim in view: keeping the hands clear and radiant.

None of this is about changing the colour of the skin. It is about keeping the texture and moisture of the hands in a state that reflects light evenly, which is what clarity means.

Dull hands: why dryness, friction, sun and circulation cloud the skin

Skin on the hands that is in good condition has an even texture, is comfortably moist, and is supple and firm. Because the surface is smooth it returns light evenly, and that is what we read as clarity. Dull hands appear when any one of those conditions fails.

  • Dryness. As the stratum corneum loses water the texture becomes uneven, and a finely roughened surface scatters light instead of reflecting it. On hands that are washed often, this is the most common cause by far.
  • Friction. Rubbing dry with a towel, handling paper and fabric all day. Repeated friction disturbs the stratum corneum and takes the smoothness off the surface.
  • Sun. Backs of hands that live in daylight dry out faster, and as firmness declines and spots appear the overall tone looks clouded.
  • Circulation. Long hours at a keyboard, heating and air conditioning slow the blood supply to the hands. Colour drains from them, and dullness and dryness advance together.

The four overlap. Dry hands are more vulnerable to friction, sun-exposed hands lose water faster, and cold hands dry out sooner. The thinking behind all of this is set out in our Hand Beauty Guide.

Dryness and dullness: an even texture is what returns the light

Underneath nearly every case of dull hands is dryness. The hands are washed far more often than the face, and each wash carries away some of the sebum film. Keep the water in the stratum corneum, and the surface stays smooth enough to reflect light evenly.

  1. Wash in lukewarm water and pat dry rather than rubbing.
  2. As soon as the hands are dry, replace the moisture from the back of the hand to the fingertips.
  3. By day, choose a product that lets you return to work at once, and reapply after every wash.
  4. At night, take your time: the back of the hand, between the fingers, around the nails.

The way you spread it is part of the care

When you work the moisturiser over the back of the hand with the whole palm, the movement itself encourages circulation in the hands. Go slowly, enclosing one hand in the other. If the product is scented, those thirty seconds become a pause in the day as well. The technique is described in a journal piece on hand massage.

Friction and sun: what the hands touch and what they receive by day

Daytime dullness is the sum of what the hands rub against and what falls on them. Two things are worth reviewing: friction and ultraviolet light.

Reducing friction

Press the towel or paper against the skin instead of rubbing. In jobs that handle paper all day, moisturise the fingertips often so that the friction is never dry. Hang heavy bags from the arm rather than the fingers. Small things, but keeping the stratum corneum undisturbed is the shortest route to an even texture.

Shielding from the sun

The backs of the hands are uncovered and receive sunlight all year round. Apply sunscreen to them every morning at the same time as the face, and reapply roughly every two hours outdoors. It washes off with every wash, so put it on again before going out. Sunscreen drags on dry skin, so let the moisturiser settle first. More on our page about sun protection for hands.

Circulation and dullness: cold hands, still hands

The warmth, colour and softness of the hands depend on fine blood circulation. Winter air, summer air conditioning, hands left motionless on a keyboard for hours: when circulation slows, colour withdraws, and dullness and dryness advance side by side.

  • Once an hour, close the hands into fists and open them wide, several times, to send blood to the fingertips.
  • On cold days, warm the hands to the wrist before moisturising; warm skin takes moisture more readily.
  • Use the moment of spreading the moisturiser as a short massage, one hand enclosing the other.

Attending to circulation does more than remove one cause of dullness; it changes how well the skin receives whatever you apply afterwards. If a change in colour or a rough patch does not respond to moisturising, or any symptom persists, consult a dermatologist.

Frequently asked questions

What makes hands look dull?

Four things: dryness, friction, sun and sluggish circulation. Dryness sits beneath most of them. When the stratum corneum is short of water the texture becomes uneven, and the surface scatters light instead of returning it, so the hands look clouded. Because the hands are washed so often, this is the most common cause.

How do I keep my hands looking clear?

Wash in lukewarm water, pat dry and moisturise at once. Apply sunscreen to the backs of the hands by day and avoid rubbing. On cold days warm the hands before moisturising, and use the moment of spreading the product as a brief massage. Skin with an even texture and enough moisture reflects light evenly.

Is circulation linked to dull hands?

Yes. The warmth, colour and softness of the hands rest on fine blood circulation. Long hours at a keyboard, heating and air conditioning slow it, colour withdraws and dullness and dryness advance together. Opening and closing the hands once an hour and warming them before moisturising both help.

Do I need sun protection against dull hands?

Yes. The backs of the hands are uncovered and receive sunlight all year. Ultraviolet light advances dryness and, together with a loss of firmness and the appearance of spots, leaves the hands looking clouded. Apply sunscreen to the backs of the hands every morning and reapply about every two hours outdoors.

Can a hand serum be used for dull hands?

It can be used to prevent the uneven texture that dryness causes and to keep the hands moist and clear. It does not change the colour of the skin. Apply it after washing and before bed, from the back of the hand to the fingertips, as a way of keeping the surface smooth.

Soie's hand serum

Soie (pronounced swah; French for silk) measures the beauty of the hands by moisture, smoothness and radiance. Enlight Hand Serum, a beauty serum designed only for the hands, conditions the texture and moisture of the skin with EGF and KGF (skin-conditioning ingredients) and five ceramides and peptides (moisturising ingredients), aiming for the radiance and smoothness of silk. It sinks in without stickiness, so it can be reapplied after every wash.

Its fragrance, created by our dedicated perfumer, turns the half-minute of spreading it into a pause that settles both the circulation in the hands and the mind. Clarity is kept in the repetition: wash, moisturise, and spread with one hand enclosing the other. Further questions about dull hands are answered in our Hand Beauty Q&A.
