Hand Cream and Serum Together: Who Does What, Which Goes First, and When
A hand cream shields the skin with a film of oil; a hand serum layers water and beauty ingredients into it. Because the roles differ, the order, the amount and the time of day decide how the hands feel. Here is how to combine the two.
Asked whether to use a hand cream or a hand serum, the honest answer is that nobody has to choose. They are not rivals but tools with different jobs: the cream protects, the serum moisturises. Once that division of labour is clear, a dry February afternoon and a day of twenty hand-washes at work each have an obvious routine.
This page is about the practical side of using hand cream and serum together. What each one does, which goes on first, how much to use, how to split them across morning, daytime and night, and how to tell a one-product day from a two-product day. It reasons from the nature of the two forms rather than from any particular brand.
How hand cream and serum differ: protection and moisture
A hand cream is an emulsion built around oils. It forms a film on the surface of the skin that slows the evaporation of water from the stratum corneum. Its job is protection, and it has been the standard protectant for dry, chapped hands for generations.
A serum is a liquid built around water and beauty ingredients. It is a moisturiser in the strict sense: it layers water and smoothness into the outer skin. A serum made for the hands is designed to replace, wash after wash, the moisture that washing removes. The back of the hand has few sebaceous glands and thin skin, so covering it with oil is not enough on its own; giving it water and beauty ingredients is what keeps the skin in good condition underneath.
Hand care products fall into three groups: moisturisers that replenish water, protectants that support the skin barrier, and products that attempt both. The serum belongs to the first group, the cream to the second. The question is never which is better, but which the hands need at this hour. The structure of the skin of the hands is explained in our Hand Beauty Guide.
The order: serum first, cream on top when needed
When the two are layered, the water-based product goes on first and the oil-based one second. Put the film of oil down first and whatever is applied over it struggles to reach the skin.
- Wash, then press the hands dry with a towel. No rubbing, and no drops left behind.
- Take the serum on the back of one hand, bring both hands together and spread it over the whole hand, between the fingers and around the nails.
- Once it has sunk in, add hand cream over the top if the hands need it.
- On a morning you are going out, finish with sunscreen on the backs of the hands.
A serum that leaves no stickiness takes a layer of cream without turning heavy. Equally, if the serum alone leaves the hands comfortable, the cream can be skipped. Keep the order fixed and let the number of products change with the day; that is the version people actually keep up.
Amount and timing: morning, daytime and night
For a serum, one or two pearl-sized drops is a working amount. Several light applications through the day sink in better than one generous one. For a cream, follow the product's own guidance and spread it thinly, concentrating on the backs of the hands.
Morning: a light serum, sunscreen on top
Apply the serum as the last step of getting ready, and if you are going outdoors, follow it with sunscreen. An oily film from a cream can make sunscreen harder to spread, so a serum-only morning is the easier one to manage.
Daytime: serum alone, after every wash
Through the day, reapply only the serum, after each wash or sanitiser. If nothing sticky is left behind, a keyboard or a phone can be used straight away. A bottle kept on the desk or in a bag makes the habit effortless.
Night: serum, then cream to seal
In the evening, after the last wash, work the serum from the backs of the hands to the nail contours and, on drier days, add cream over it. The film of oil slows water loss through the night and the hands are softer in the morning. When the hands are badly chapped, cotton gloves worn over the moisturiser overnight are a well-known extra.
One product or two: judging by season and situation
Two products are not required every day. The deciding question is what the hands are losing right now.
- Days of wet work or frequent washing. What is being lost is water. Increase the number of serum applications; cream at night is usually enough.
- Dry seasons and heated rooms. Moisture escapes quickly. Serum followed by cream, the two-product routine, suits these months.
- Summer and air-conditioned offices. The season when stickiness is least welcome. Serum alone keeps the hands light; the daytime priority is sun protection.
- Cracks and chapping. Add a water-repellent protective type over the serum. If the condition persists, consult a dermatologist.
The great advantage of bringing a serum into hand care is that it can be reapplied as often as the hands are washed. The cream guards the night; the serum carries the day. With that settled, the look of the hands depends far less on the weather. Seasonal advice for dry hands is set out in Dry and rough hands.
Frequently asked questions
Which goes on first, hand cream or hand serum?
The serum. A water-based serum is applied first and allowed to sink in; an oil-based cream can then be layered on top when the hands need more protection. Putting the oil film down first makes it harder for anything applied afterwards to reach the skin. On mornings outdoors, sunscreen goes on last.
If I can only use one, should it be the cream or the serum?
If your hands are washed many times a day, a non-sticky serum that can be reapplied each time is the more useful single product. If your hands are driest at night, serum followed by cream is the safer pairing. Decide by what the hands are losing: water, or protection.
Does layering cream over a serum feel heavy?
Not if the serum sinks in cleanly. A thin layer of cream over a serum that leaves no residue stays comfortable. If you dislike any film at all, keep the daytime to serum only and reserve the cream for bedtime. Spread the cream thinly and follow its own guidance on amount.
Should the routine change when my hands are very dry?
The order stays the same. Work the serum from the backs of the hands to the fingertips and nail contours, then seal with cream. On badly chapped days, cotton gloves worn over the moisturiser overnight are a well-known extra. If redness or itching continues, consult a dermatologist.
Where does sunscreen go in the order?
Last. In the morning, apply the serum, add a thin layer of cream if you need it, then sunscreen on the backs of the hands. Because an oily film can make sunscreen harder to spread, a serum-only morning is the easier one. Outdoors, reapply sunscreen roughly every two hours and after washing.
Soie's proposal: build around the serum, add cream freely
Soie (pronounced swah; French for silk) makes a beauty serum designed only for the hands, Enlight Hand Serum. It combines EGF and KGF (skin-conditioning ingredients) with five ceramides and peptides (moisturising ingredients), melts in the moment it touches the fingertips and leaves no stickiness. Because it moisturises on its own, it can carry the daytime alone, with your usual hand cream layered over it on dry nights.
Wash with Moist Fragrance Hand & Body Soap, which moisturises with every wash, then apply the hand serum. Keep that wash-then-moisturise sequence as the spine of the routine and add cream only on the days that call for it. As the simplest way to bring a serum into the care of dry hands, this is the order we suggest.
